Times Allyson Bailey Graduating from high school looked uncertain for Allyson Bailey and going to college seemed like an unattainable dream to her and her family as she recovered from three head injuries. BLACKSBURG — Three years after Allyson Bailey sustained a concussion in a high school basketball game, the Virginia Tech freshman will go back to the sport that changed her life. Bailey, who just completed her first semester of traditional classroom schooling since she sustained multiple traumatic brain injuries, is settling into college life on Tech’s campus with a new church, intramural sports and a life she calls normal.

Goad, Rebecca Ann Blankenship Rebecca Ann Blankenship Goad, 77, of Bedford, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the Centra Lynchburg Hospice House. She was born on Monday, August 1, 1938 and raised in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Edgar Blankenship and Ruth Farley Blankenship.

She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Sherman Blankenship and Thomas Blankenship. She was retired from Bedford Weaving Mill having worked there for 30+ years and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was a loving mother to Leslie Parker of Bedford, Robert Goad and wife, Annette of Bedford, James Goad and wife, Judy of Lowry, Donald Goad and wife, Connie of Altavista. She was a proud grandmother to Ryan Parker and wife, Samantha, Ethan Goad, Samantha “Sami” Goad, Nicholas Goad, Michael Goad and a great-grandmother to Allaynna Parker. She is also survived by her sisters, Emma Veddar of N. Y., Martha Edwards of Bedford, Eleanor Blankenship of Maryland.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. the graveside on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Virginia Memorial Park with the Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford. Boyd, Albert Lane Albert Lane Boyd, 89, of Ferrum, departed this life on Thursday, January 7, 2016. He was the only child of the late, George Cleveland Boyd and Myrtle Boyd Thomas.

Lane is survived by his wife, Diamond Bowling Boyd whom he married on December 7, 1944. They had many happy years together. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Herbert Bowling and Hosea Bowling; and one sister-in-law, Eva B. Pyron. Lane served two years in the United States Navy, World War II, in the South Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6, Franklin County. He received a machinist degree from DCC, Danville, Va. He worked as a Research Technician at Dan River Mills, Inc. He also worked for Ferrum College many years and retired from Aerospace Testing in Roanoke, Va. Lane was a charter member of the Crossroads Ruritan Club and later a member of the Waidsboro Ruritan Club. Lane actively served the Lord at Maple Grove United Methodist Church.

He was a loving, caring person and will always be remembered for jokes, and tall tales leading to a contagious laugh. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Sunday, January 10, 2016 from Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Baesik Peter Choi officiating. Interment will be private in St. John’s Cemetery, Endicott. In lieu of flowers contributions will be welcomed for the Maple Grove United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 452 Henry Road, Ferrum, Virginia 24088. A heartfelt gratitude is expressed to Maple Grove UMC congregation; to Peggy Hale for home caregiving; Helen, his hospice nurse; and to Dr. Unwin.

His family will receive friends 5 to 7 p. m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount. Beckner, Irene M. Irene M. Beckner, 59, of Wirtz, peacefully departed this life on Friday, January 8, 2016 at home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emory and Elizabeth Jamison; and one brother, Cephas Jamison. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Byron Beckner; three children, Curtis and Marcie Beckner of Quinter, Kan., Daryl Beckner of Wirtz, Sandra and Jordan Rogers of Eaton, Ohio; three grandchildren, Zayne, Zolton, and Zion Beckner of Quinter, Kan.; two brothers, Walter and Mary Sue Jamison of Troutville, and Joseph and Becky Jamison of Troutville; two sisters, Ruth and Alan Deaton of West Alexandria, Ohio, and Martha Jamison of Troutville; two sisters-in-law, Marie and Benji Sprinkle of Fincastle, Cheryl and Ronnie Bower of Wirtz; one brother-in-law, Harmon and Wanda Beckner of Wirtz.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Oak Hill Old German Baptist Brethren Church with The Home Brethren officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p. m. Saturday, January 9, 2016 and 2 to 4 p. m., 5 to 8 p. m., Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Church. Funeral Services will be 1 p. m. Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg.
